Independent Retail
Independent Retail Provides Unique Merchandising
Despite the pandemic occurring, not everyone is buying online. Many consumers still choose to support independent retailers with the unique merchandise they provide. This merchandise is carefully curated, focused on specialized items that cater to a market’s niche. These retailers are not affiliated with corporations; they are individuals often made up of entrepreneurs or small businesses. As Thryv notes, they “…are solely responsible for their company’s merchandising, management, and operations.”[1] This approach allows independent retailers to be differentiated from online commerce. Allowing them to tailor their merchandise to a customer’s specific preference, giving the customer an emotional connection towards these retailers.
How Independent Retail is Managed
These independent retailers are managed and located at brick-and-mortar stores, traditional retail businesses that have physical storefronts.[2] Physical storefronts allow customers to be able to view merchandise in person, giving the customer an opportunity to view all the products’ features physically. This storefront presence helps support experiential marketing, a marketing strategy that aims to engage customers, giving them memorable in-store experiences. Additionally, It provides these retail stores with a brand personality e-commerce cannot contribute to. Specifically, it is the ability of being able to bond with the customer emotionally. Through diverse events, activities, and interactive marketing campaigns, customers can actively involve themselves with due to these physical storefronts.[3]
Variety of Independent Retail Operations
A variety of diverse operations involving independent retailers exist, focusing on bringing a type of immersive retail to customers. This can be through engaging customers with their five senses or having an overall brand narrative. Typical independent retailers can be mom-and-pop shops, small businesses that are usually family owned. They have a variety of local community products and services personalized and catered to local patrons. This is due to these stores operating only at single locations.[4] Additionally, pop-up shops and kiosks are in this category, retail stores that are in specific locations for a temporary time. Not all pop-up shops or kiosks are independent retailers, however, those that commonly focus on specific themes like holiday decorations or retro-inspired products. Another prominent type of independent retailer is boutiques. Boutiques usually focus on curating high-quality items for a specific focus such as a certain fashion style or type of accessory. Usually ran by boss babes, these independent woman businesses provide characteristics that differentiates luxury style or modern comforts.
Customer Service’s Role in Independent Retail
As stores aim to provide a personalized experience for consumers, it is important to acknowledge customer service and the recent decline of it. Especially with Forrester’s CX Index reporting that North America has hit an all-time low rating of customer service.[5] A large factor has been the implementation of artificial intelligence to answer phone calls, or the indifference to customers. This indifference shows when staff overshadows customers in conversations, only offering help when directly asked and failing to assists further. Although, this is what makes independent retail distinctive regarding customer service. Independent retailers take time to engage and actively participate with the customer unlike chain retailers. To emphasize this point, a Melrose article highlights this contrast, where they visited six big box retailers. They encountered “an astonishing indifference to customer service.” However, when they went to an independent retailer, they were “promptly greeted and engaged.”[6] Although personalized experiences may differ for customers, it displays a reason as to why independent retailers are still thriving and important.
